Why drive north instead of staying south

South Bali (Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud) gets the vast majority of visitors — which means north Bali's roads, beaches, and villages carry noticeably less traffic, at the cost of a longer drive to reach them.

Getting there

The drive from the south to Lovina, on Bali's north coast, typically takes 2.5-3.5 hours depending on your starting point and the route (via Bedugul through the mountains, or the longer western coastal road). The mountain route is more scenic but slower and windier — worth the extra time if you're not in a rush.

What's in the north

• Lovina — a quieter black-sand-beach town known for early-morning dolphin-watching boat trips, a different pace entirely from the south's beach clubs.
• Munduk — a hill village surrounded by waterfalls, clove and coffee plantations, and cooler mountain air; several short waterfall hikes start directly from the village.
• Twin Lakes (Buleleng viewpoint) — a well-known photo stop on the mountain route, overlooking Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan.

Driving conditions up north

Expect narrower, more winding roads once you're off the main coastal highway, with far less traffic than the south — but also fewer services (fuel stations, mechanics) spaced further apart, so it's worth starting a long driving day with a full tank.

Is it worth an overnight stay?

Given the drive time, most visitors find a one-night stay in Lovina or Munduk makes more sense than a single long day trip — it turns a rushed there-and-back into a genuinely relaxed couple of days.
