Bali's rental market is largely informal — Instagram accounts, WhatsApp groups, and word-of-mouth listings sit alongside registered agencies with real offices, and it's not always obvious from a listing alone which is which.

1. Do they show the actual car, not a stock photo?

A legitimate agency photographs its own fleet, interior included. Stock or borrowed images are a real warning sign that the "listing" may not correspond to any specific, available vehicle.

2. Do they ask for your documents before handing over the keys?

A rental agency doing its job properly asks for your license, IDP, and passport before you drive off — not just a deposit and a phone photo of your passport. If they skip this, it's a signal about the rest of their process too.

3. Is there a real, written contract?

Verbal agreements and a cash handshake leave you with no recourse if a dispute comes up over the deposit, damage, or the rental terms themselves. A written contract, even a simple one, is the baseline.

4. Can you actually reach them if something goes wrong mid-rental?

A flat tire, a question about the contract, a delay — you want a direct line to the agency, not just an automated booking confirmation with no way to follow up.

5. Do they have a track record?

Reviews from previous renters, a registered business presence, or a listing history all help — a brand-new account with no history and unusually low prices is worth extra scrutiny.
