Ubud isn't Kuta. The roads through the rice terraces and forest villages are narrower, often one lane in practice even where they're marked for two, and the town center around Jalan Raya Ubud gets genuinely congested by mid-morning.

Why a car here (not just a scooter)

Ubud's best-known sights — the Tegallalang rice terraces, the Sacred Monkey Forest, Tirta Empul temple, Campuhan Ridge — are spread 15-40 minutes apart by road, often up steep, winding routes. A car with air conditioning is a real comfort after a humid morning of temple-hopping, and it's the safer choice on wet, leaf-slick roads after a rain shower.

What's different about driving in Ubud

• Parking is scarce at the popular sights — Tegallalang in particular has informal paid parking lots run by locals, and arriving before 9am avoids both the crowds and the parking scramble.
• Roads narrow fast once you're off the main routes — a car with a local driver, or at minimum a GPS with recent data, saves a lot of three-point turns on a one-lane village road.
• Ceremony traffic is common near temples on auspicious dates — build in slack if your route passes Tirta Empul or Goa Gajah.

Self-drive or with a driver in Ubud

Given the terrain, many visitors choose a car with a driver for a day of sightseeing and switch to self-drive (or a scooter) once based in town. Either way, confirm the vehicle and driver are booked through a real agency — not a hotel's informal referral with no paper trail.
