Bali runs on two broad seasons — dry (roughly April to October) and rainy (roughly November to March) — and both change what renting and driving a car actually feels like.

Dry season (April-October)

• Pricing climbs, especially around the July-August peak and the Christmas/New Year crossover into early January — book ahead if your dates fall in these windows.
• Roads are at their best — no standing water, no reduced visibility from downpours, easier driving overall.
• Traffic is heaviest precisely because more tourists are on the road at the same time you are.

Rainy season (November-March)

• Rates are typically lower, and availability is easier since fewer tourists are traveling.
• Roads can flood in low-lying spots, particularly in parts of Denpasar and Kuta after a heavy downpour — check locally rather than assuming a route is passable.
• Visibility drops fast in a tropical downpour — if you're driving self-drive, slowing down and pulling over during the heaviest bursts is normal practice, not overcaution.
• Ceremony and holiday traffic can still spike around Galungan/Kuningan dates, which shift each year on the Balinese calendar and aren't tied to the wet/dry split.

What doesn't change
