What is the Bali Mandara toll road?

Bali Mandara is a roughly 10-kilometer elevated toll highway connecting Ngurah Rai Airport, Nusa Dua, and the Benoa area, built over the water along the coast to bypass the dense surface traffic of south Bali.

When it's worth the toll

• Airport to Nusa Dua — this is the route where Mandara earns its fee most clearly, cutting past Jimbaran and Kuta's surface congestion, especially valuable in the early evening.
• Avoiding Kuta's peak-hour crawl — if your route would otherwise cut straight through central Kuta between roughly 4pm and 7pm, the toll road is usually the faster call even accounting for the fee.

When it's not worth it

• If your destination is in Kuta, Seminyak, or Canggu itself, the toll road doesn't reach those areas directly — you'll still be on surface roads for the last stretch, so weigh whether the detour actually saves time.
• Outside peak traffic hours, the time saved shrinks and the surface route (with its beach and coastal views) can be a wash.

Paying the toll

Bali Mandara uses an electronic toll-collection system rather than cash booths — most rental cars in Bali come with this already set up, but it's worth asking your rental agency directly whether the toll is handled automatically or whether you need to arrange it yourself before driving.
