Abu Dhabi and Dubai share a country, a currency, and the same UAE driving rules — but the two cities feel different behind the wheel, and it's worth knowing the differences if Abu Dhabi is your actual base.

License and document requirements

The same as the rest of the UAE: most tourists' home licenses are accepted for the length of a short visit, and a passport is needed for identity verification. An International Driving Permit is the safer, unambiguous option if your home license isn't in Latin script.

What's different from Dubai

• Lower density, wider roads — Abu Dhabi's core areas (the Corniche, Saadiyat and Yas islands) are generally less congested than central Dubai at the same hour, though the Sheikh Zayed corridor between the two cities can get heavy at commute times.
• Darb toll gates, Abu Dhabi's own electronic toll system, separate from Dubai's Salik — a rental car set up for one doesn't automatically work for the other, so confirm with your agency which system your vehicle is registered for if you're driving between the two cities.
• A more spread-out layout — Yas Island (theme parks, Formula 1 circuit), Saadiyat (museums), and the downtown Corniche area are each a proper drive apart, more so than Dubai's tighter core.

Day trips between the two cities

The Abu Dhabi-Dubai drive is roughly 90 minutes to two hours depending on traffic and exact starting points — genuinely doable as a day trip in either direction, provided your rental agreement allows cross-emirate driving (most do, but confirm rather than assume).
